It started with a horror themed print exchange called Eibon II, for which I made Redneck Zombies. I see them every now and then driving around Alabama. Observing them in the wild, I initially suspected they were attempting to mask themselves with camouflage, parodying the living in attempt to lure in unsuspecting prey. I started seeing more and more of them, especially at my day job. They’re dumb and slow, the rednecks. But then, they always were. I now believe that the freshly dead are simply acting the only way they know how, with their limited brain capacity. As they familiarize themselves and develop an undead lifestyle, they may lay the foundation for their own culture. Zombie sociologist George Romero hypothesized that when the dead walked the earth, they would start to replace our society with their own. What we consider crude and immature by our standards is the highest echelon of the infant zombie civilization. I believe the fraternity houses will be their first cultural centers, as the alcohol will help to preserve their rotting minds.
Perhaps as these relics of the past start attempting to replace living humans, they will try to reassert the living humans’ expired cultural memes. I believe that some zombies will have an easier time, since their previous existence required little or no thought process anyway. To us, they seem as relics of another age gone by, the artifacts of which are still ambling around and trying to usurp us.
